President Remengesau Accredits New Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Palau

On October 23, President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. accredited His Excellency Luis Antonio Calvo Castano as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Palau.

President Remengesau recognized the history shared with the Kingdom of Spain and expressed Palau’s commitment to work closely with the Spanish Government to further enhance bilateral relations. He further expressed his appreciation to the Government of Spain and its People for its partnership and support in areas of climate change, renewable energy, global warming and issues related to the ocean.

“We continue to seek your strong support through the European Union and through our bilateral relationship as the ocean is an important issue for the Republic,” said President Remengesau during the presentation of credentials held in Ngerulmud, Melekeok. “Palau has been declared the host for the 2020 ‘Our Ocean’ Conference and we hope Spain will be a strong partner and sponsor in bringing forth issues affecting the Pacific.”

Ambassador Castano expressed Spain’s desires to become a dialogue partner with Pacific nations through the Pacific Islands Forum and thanked Palauan authorities and President Remengesau for supporting Spain in this regard during the 2014 Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting held in Palau. Ambassador Castano reiterated Spain’s embrace and support in dealing with the same causes as Palau, including issues such climate change and the promotion of economic activities that respect the environment.

Ambassador Castano is a career diplomatic having served in various foreign diplomacy posts since 1982.
