President Remengesau Accredits New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Palau

On October 23, President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr. accredited Her Excellency Karena Rosa Muaiava Sega Masina Lyons as the 9th non-resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of New Zealand to the Republic of Palau.

“The Republic of Palau and the Government of New Zealand have shared and continues to maintain strong partnerships in climate change, global warming and renewable energy through the Pacific Islands Forum and the United Nations,” said President Remengesau during the presentation of credential held at the Capitol in Ngerulmud. “We look forward to working with you in the coming years to elevate our relationship and friendship.” He further expressed Palau and New Zealand’s shared anti-nuclear stance as displayed during the recent signing of the United Nations anti-nuclear treaty.

With Palau’s anticipated hosting of the 2020 ‘Our Ocean’ Conference, President Remengesau commits to work in close partnership and seeks New Zealand’s support in showcasing important issues facing the Pacific.

In expressing her commitments, Ambassador Lyons stated, “The Pacific is the heart of my home too, as an Ambassador I will draw on my unwavering commitment and love for the Pacific to serve the bilateral relationship of our two island nations. I look forward to serving our bilateral relationship for the new three years.”

Ambassador Lyons’ presentation of credentials ceremony was witnessed by Paramount Chief Ibedul Yutaka Gibbons, Paramount Chief Reklai Bao Ngirmang, Senate Floor Leader Kerai Mariur, Senator Aric Nakamura, Vice Speaker Lucio Ngiraiwet, Associate Justice John Rechucher, and members of the Cabinet. Ambassador Lyons was accompanied by Senior Policy Advisor Jake Hamstra.
